If you are looking for an intelligent, powerful, reliable livestock guardian that can be reserved with strangers, yet loyal and devoted to its stock and family, including children, a Karakachan may be just what you're looking for!
What we love about our Karakachans:
We brought our first Karakachans, Luna and Astra to the farm in June 2020, and our male, Bear joined us in September 2022. They have all grown to be invaluable guardians, each giving us peace of mind, while also possessing the wonderful traits of the Karakachan breed, as well as having their own strengths and personalities.
When properly bonded with livestock, poultry, your family, and accustomed to their environment, the Karakachan will be a force to be reckoned with against predators and a loyal protector of your family and property.
The Karakachan will bark at any perceived threats but is otherwise a quiet dog. They are not known to roam like other livestock guardian breeds and ours do well on small acreage that is well fenced. Proper bonding and training will help your puppy get off to the right start! They are a large breed and weigh between 75 and 125 pounds.
Karakachans originated in Bulgaria and are named after the Karakachan people, a native group that descended from tribes of nomadic shepherds that tended flocks of Karakachan Sheep, hundreds of years ago in Greece and Bulgaria.
