We raise several varieties of chickens that will add beauty to any backyard or farm, as well as provide a colorful assortment of eggs that are sure to brighten your day and your basket!
We love eggs in every color but we have a special interest in breeding for eggs in blue, green, olive, chocolate, and speckled varieties! We plan to use a generational approach to create hens that will lay the most unique eggs in those varieties. To us, it's so fun to open a carton of beautifully colored eggs!
Our Cream Legbars lay eggs in beautiful shades of blue! Originating in Great Britain, the Cream Legbar is the result of crossing a Plymouth Rock with a Brown Leghorn. Aside from the cute little crest of feathers on their heads, and their gorgeous eggs, we love that they are autosexing, so males and females can be sexed at hatch by their coloring! Our Cream Legbars are also used in our Olive Egger breeding program.
Welsummers are best known for their beautiful dark brown eggs and some even produce speckles! Welsummers originated in the Netherlands from crossing several other breeds including Rhode Island Reds, Partridge Leghorns, Wyandottes, and Cochins. We are hoping to reintroduce Welsummers producing heavily speckled eggs back into our flock in spring 2024. Our Welsummers are also used in our Olive Egger program.
Blue Laced Red Wyandottes joined our flock because of their beautiful feather pattern! They come in three color varieties including blue, black, and splash. Our flock contains mostly blues. Blue Laced Red Wyandottes originated in the United States in the 1800's and they lay a medium sized light tan or cream colored egg. Our Blue Laced Red Wyandottes are used in our green laying Easter Egger program.
Another new variety for us are Black Tailed Red Marans. Like other Marans, they lay a dark brown egg, sometimes with speckling. They were first shown in Paris, France in 1932. We are excited to add these to our flock as well as use them in our Olive and Chocolate Egger program.
Olive Eggers can produce some of the prettiest eggs in varying shades of green and sometimes, depending on the breeding, even brown! They are created by crossing a homozygous blue (carrying two copies of blue) egg layer with a brown egg layer.
In our program, we will use Welsummer, Wyandotte, Maran, and Olive Egger hens and Cream Legbar or Black Tailed Red Maran roosters to create generational and back cross Olive Eggers.
